Identify and navigate your users' industry-wide and product-specific mental models.
To uncover mental models in a particulate problem domain, conduct intentional research / service design of your target audience's usage of existing products to evaluate how to leverage their mental models in designing new products or redesigns.
When product changes are substantial, always create a switch between old and new versions to allow users to decide when they’re ready to learn the new interface.
Revisit skeuomorphic interaction in digital surfaces to leverage real-world mental models (e.g. the switch UI).
Learn from Snapchat’s missteps that resulted in users’ confusion.
